Ice Roads in Nuiqsut

Hello Ladies... the amount of women in construction here at tribe is discouraging, to say the least.

I arrived in Kuparuk, Alaska two weeks ago to do prelim topo surveys for use in designing seasonal ice roads here on the North Slopes of Alaska, and one permanent gravel road to Nuiqsut. This would essentially connect the village of Nuiqsut to Fairbanks, Alaska (by way of more than 1,000 miles...:)

Very good gig, happy to be back up north. Also, very happy not to be working in the field anymore!!!

I posted some pictures in our tribe photo album, check them out.

How are everyone else's projects going? Where are you now, and what is your foresight for winter work??

    im still working in the sand dune complexes of maui. work doesnt change much out here for the winter. unless we are working in a muddy place when the rains come. but in the sand, those operators just keep driving, in their closed cab machines, as i trudge through the wet sand and pouring rain to look for ancient remains.

        Very cool. Digging for ancient remains in Hawaii and turning a garage into a Yoga Studio??

        A diverse and interesting group, albeit small.

        The State of AK pulled the funding for the road to Nuiqsut two weeks after I arrived. (Murkowski!! Doh!!) So I spent the last 4 weeks in reg.ops @Kuparuk field office. Good stuff-- slow and had the chance to bring the latest and greatest into the workings of some old school fuddy duddies and their Leroy ways :) Heading back to Duluth in 3.25 days. It will be nice to take a bath and SLEEP IN!!!

        There's a long history of adversity and hardship in my employment history, this is a difficult industry. When I left Alaska the last time, I vowed NEVER to work in the field again, and it was the best decision I ever made. I feel empowered for the first time professionally (here's to empowering myself in other aspects of my life) and like I can make it happen. Finally!!

        This last year after walking off a job on the Pribilofs and returning to MN, visiting my folks in Moose Lake on weekends, running into old friends from high school and such... the quick life stories and resume competitions. I felt completely lost. That feeling is gone now and I feel positive and focused on the future, a great way to start the new year.

        What challenges have you had to face on the job in your life that you've overcome? What are some of the disapointments -- and do you have a victory story as well??

        +++++
